Overview The Irish Longitudinal study on Ageing (TILDA) is a major
inter-institutional initiative led by Trinity College Dublin which aims to
produce a massive improvement in the quantity and quality of data, research and
information relating to older people and ageing in Ireland. It involves
interviews on a two yearly basis with a large cohort of people aged 50 and over
to collect detailed information on all aspects of their lives, including the
economic dimension (pensions, employment, living standards etc.), health aspects
(physical, mental, service needs and usage, etc.) and social aspects (family
structure and support, formal and informal care, social participation, social
engagement, etc.) The study involves both survey interviews and physical and
biological measurements to be carried out by trained nurses in specially
equipped centres, and in respondent homes. The sample size for the main survey
is 8,000 people, and the data collection for wave 1 is finalized
